.......   SMALL DATSUN TRUCKS
smaller sized Post-War commercial vehicles from 1946 to 1968

DATSUN  17T  PICK-UP
(1946 Model)

After the war many Japanese companies struggled to get back on their feet. With very limited resources, depleted staff numbers and severely damaged factories, Nissan had no choice other than to start building pre-war models again before work could begin on designing all-new models. The 17T was originally built in 1937, and was put into production again in July 1946. Like the pre-war model it also used a 722cc 16hp side valve 4cyl. engine

CUTIE FACT - Datsun 320s used four different engines

Just to make life interesting for people restoring Datsun 320s, Nissan built four different types of E-1 engines between 1962 and 1965. And these differences weren't simple things like different carbs, or a different manifold design, oh no, these modifications all required a completely different engine block design. And just to confuse everyone, all of these four different block designs are all called the E-1 engine. Although Nissan never had a different name for each type of E-1 engine, I refer to them as Mark 1, 2, 3 and 4 engines, just to make it easier to figure out what engine people have when they write in asking for parts or advice. These are the different engines -
Mark 1 E-1 engines from 000001 to 152699 have offset connecting rods with bearings are 1 inch wide. Uses a bypass type lubrication system.
Mark 2 E-1 engines from 152700 to 280169 use a bypass type lubrication system, oil filter housing is cast into the engine block. Camshaft oil pump/distributor drive cog has 10 teeth.
Mark 3 E-1 engines from 280170 to 547143 use a full-flow type lubrication system with a detachable alloy oil filter housing. Camshaft oil pump/distributor drive cog has 13 teeth.
Mark 4 E-1 engines from 547144 onwards have the oil pressure relief valve located on the oil filter housing.
