Datsun CUTIE's Truck Trivia

UD Nissan Diesel is the name of the company that builds the larger Nissan trucks. UD is actually an abreviation for UNITED DIESEL. It is called United Diesel because the company came about as the result of a colaboration (or union) between Minsei Diesel Industries Ltd. and Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. in 1960. Minsei Diesel started out in 1938 as Nippon Diesel Engineering Co. Ltd. and had the licence to build Krupp-Junkers German designed diesel engines, which they fitted to a 7 ton truck of their own design. In 1942 they changed their name to Kangefaguchi Diesel Industries Ltd., and after the war in 1946 they became Minsei Sangyo Ltd., and finally Minsei Diesel Industries Ltd. in 1950.
In 1955 Minsei started supplying 100hp 3cyl. diesel engines to Nissan for their range of large trucks. In 1960 the two companies agreed to colaborate to form United Diesel.
