CUTIE FACT -

The earlier vehicles built before 1932 were sold as a DAT, which was a name made up from the first letter of the of the surname of each of the company owners, K. Den, R. Aoyama and A. Takeuchi. Dat was also the Japanese word meaning 'hare' or 'rabbit'. If you look at the radiator grille of a car from this era you will see that it has what at first looks like the leaping cat on the front of a Jaguar, but is actually a leaping hare.

In 1931 the cars were named Datson, intended to mean 'son of DAT', unfortunately son also meant "loss" in Japanese, considering that DAT meant 'hare', this meant the name actually translated to 'hare loss'.

In 1932 the name was changed to Datsun.
