The Complete Guide to Classic Datsun Cars and Trucks

1951 Datsun 5147 Truck
.

The Datsun 5157 was released in January 1951. The 5147 is little more than a cosmetic update of the previous 4146 model, which itself was simply the pre-war Datsun 17T put back unto production.
The big change with the introduction of the 5147 was a new bonnet. The bonnet on the old 4146 model had a series of near vertical bonnet vents aalong the side. Of the new 5147 there is instead a series of five horizontal slots that run nearly the full length of the bonnet. In the centre of these slots is a large round red badge which says Datsun 20.
Apart from that pretty much all the rest of the vehicle is the same. it continues to use the 20hp 722cc side valve engine.
The 5147 was in production until January 1953.

Model Variations

Datsun 5147 Truck
The truck version was the only commercial vehicle in the 5147 range. The van was removed from this range when a van version of the Datsun DB series went into production.

Datsun DC-3 Sports Car
As odd as it seems, the 1952 Datsun DC-3 sports car was based on the 5147 truck. The sports car used the chassis and the whole front section of the truck as a basis for the convertible. More information about this vehicle can be found on the Datsun DC-3 page.
