A new model is introduced, but things start to get confusing
in the Nissan/Datsun model range.
The Datsun 114 entered production in October 1957, at exactly
the same time as the new Datsun 210 sedan. The 114 and the 210 are virtually
identical except for their grille and exterior trim
The body of the 114 is exactly the same as the previous 113
model, the only difference being a new grille design. The new grille features
three horizontal bars with the middle one being significantly wider.
The main visual cue to distinguish a 1958 Datsun 114 from
a 1958 Datsun 210 was the grille, with the 210 having a much taller grille
that finished just under the bonnet opening, and now incorporated the Datsun
badge into the grille. The 114 grille had about 2 inches between the bonnet
opening and the top of the grille.
The 210 had a grille with very chunky wide horizontal bars, the
114 had relatively delicate and slender horizontal bars.
Inside the car there is a new instrument binnacle design,
with all the guages now located behind a large single rectangular pane
of glass.
The confusing bit is that the 114 shares the same body as the new
Datsun 210. The main difference between the 114 and the 210 is their engines.
The new 114 continued to plod along with the by now woefully underpowered
old 25hp 860cc D-10 side valve engine, which was little more than a slightly
modified version of the pre-war Datsun 17 engine. The 210 featured the
new C series 37hp 988cc overhead valve "Stone" engine.
The 210 also featured stainless steel side strips along the front
guards and front doors, the 114 had no side strips. The 114 continued to
use the same Datsun badge on the side of the car as the 113, the 210 had
a badge that said Datsun 1000. All other mechanicals on the 114
were exactly the same as the previous 113.
The 114 existed so as to be a low cost option for people
who could not afford the new Datsun 210, with it's significantly more expensive
to build OHV engine.
The 114 continued in production through until September 1958. |
